It’s the latest (#12 for those counting) in the Charlie Meiklejohn–Constance Leidl Mysteries series. Look for it at www.infinityboxpress.com July 20th.

Read the review:
Homicide detective Charlie doesn’t want this new case: it smacks of insanity and involves a crazy will, money hidden in a dead man’s house, and associated mysterious deaths, which reek of murder. His life with psychologist Constance is a good one: the last thing he needs is the demands of a dead man interrupting their lives—until he learns about a curse and finds his interest piqued.

From then on he and Constance find themselves working together on one of the strangest cases of their lives: a puzzler involving an ancient accident, siblings at odds with one another, and the history of the Bainbridge curse, which threatens a widening circle of people.

Lies, greed, family battles, and a hidden fortune within the bequest of a million-dollar house make for a centrifuge of action and personalities who are not only at odds with each other, but serve as effective barriers to the ultimate truth.

Charlie may have been hired to determine if Eve Parrish’s death was premeditated murder, but his investigations exceed the realm of his usual murder case and even crosses political jurisdictions as he encounters a sheriff and local authorities who each play an uncertain role in the distribution of a fortune and the location of a murderer.

As Charlie and Constance become more embroiled in family affairs and mystery they begin to discover that the curious will may have more behind it than a fortune—and more unforeseen consequences than even its creator could have imagined.

Strong characterization, a myriad of sub-plots, and satisfying twists and turns of plot make WHISPER HER NAME a lively, involving murder mystery that departs from formula writing to produce a truly original, compelling story.

It’s satisfying all the way to its unexpected conclusion, and is a recommended read for any murder mystery enthusiast!

This is a big announcement! InfinityBox Press LLC has been launched. You can find it at infinityboxpress.com. There you’ll find news, a list of ebooks available, future plans, readings, other items that I hope will interest you. Our intention is to make all of my backlist available as ebooks as rapidly as we can manage, and when that’s done start making Damon Knight’s backlist available. My open letter to readers and writers sums up my reason for starting this new company.

At this time all of the Charlie and Constance works are available as ebooks, including a new novel featuring the couple: Whisper Her Name. As soon as we can manage, we’ll have the Barbara Holloway novels formatted for ebooks, with a new Holloway novel due in September.

I’m very excited about this. I hated it that older works of writers I’ve followed appear to have vanished into a black hole somewhere. With ebook technology that no longer must be the case. From a writer’s first fumbling attempts to a writer’s matured, hopefully more polished, works, all will be available for criticism, comment, comparison.

People have asked about my name, if I’m related to one or more other Wilhelms here in Oregon. I’m not. My maiden name was Meredith and I started writing when I was married to Joseph Wilhelm. No one advised me to use my maiden name as my pen name and I didn’t think of it at the time. So, no relation to other Wilhelms. Since I had been published using the Wilhelm name, I was advised to stick with it. Later, thinking about it, I came to realize that bit of advice was probably wrong. At that point in my career a name change would have meant very little. I might add that in my many years of teaching writing, I always advised young women to use their maiden names. No one knows what changes the future will bring to any of us, but the name one is born with remains intact.

I’m surfacing from a deep sea of concentration, trying to finish up a new Barbara Holloway novel. I’m grateful to all of you for your posts over the past weeks. I’m also sorry that I couldn’t bring to this site the various posts that accumulated in a previous website. To get to some of the questions raised here: Heaven is High was set in about 1982. I wrote it recently but it was on my mind for a long time and I finally yielded to the impulse to fill in that blank, how Barbara met Martin and Binnie and why the enduring friendship developed. It also amused me to think that my readers will know something that Frank will never know. It was strange to write of a time before cellphones and modern computers. Such a short time ago and such big changes. I also wanted to write about Belize before it became a destination point for diving and such.

Frank’s cats are Maine coon cats, golden, and big. Twenty pounds or a little more. Barbara gave them to him when they were tiny gold puff balls and they instantly dismantled his Christmas tree, hence their names, Thing One and Thing Two. I had a cat like them once, big, beautiful, and unfortunately brainless. Frank’s cats are geniuses in comparison.

Someone asked about my work in ebook format, and I’ll have news about that in the coming weeks. I have a mountain of work out of print, no longer available except in libraries, and I intend to correct that situation. More about it later.

Also, there will be a new Charlie and Constance in the not too distant future. I love coming back to them from time to time and will never really abandon them.

Back to what I think is the final chapter of the final draft of the new Holloway novel. Thank you all for coming and for your comments. As we used to say, be seeing you.

Kate
